What will my customers see when I send a payment link?

  • Updated

Melio offers you flexibility when collecting payments from your customers. You can send them a specific invoice payment link or a general payment link without an invoice attached. This article explains what your customer sees, the differences between these options, and helps you choose the best fit for each payment scenario.

Here are the sections included in this article:

Specific invoice payment link

This link is ideal when you've already issued an invoice and want your customer to pay that exact amount for that specific invoice.

Payment page

What your customer (payor) sees and can do:

  • The payment amount is pre-selected and cannot be changed. This ensures they pay the exact amount due on the invoice.
  • The invoice file (if attached) can be viewed and downloaded. Your customer will have direct access to the invoice details for their records.
  • Save their payment details: They can save their card or bank account details for future payments.

When to use it:

  • You have a specific, existing invoice in Melio that you want your customer to pay.
  • You want to ensure the customer pays the exact amount owed without any modifications.
  • You want the customer to access and download the associated invoice easily.

General payment link without an invoice attached

This link offers more flexibility for your customer, allowing them to provide payment details themselves. It's useful for situations where you don't have a formal invoice in Melio yet, or your customer needs to specify details like the amount or an invoice number.

What your customer (payor) sees and can do:

  • Enter the payment details:
    • Payment amount: Your customer can enter the amount they wish to pay.
    • Invoice number: They can input the relevant invoice number for their payment.
    • Note to a vendor (receiver): They can add a custom note for you, the receiver.
  • Upload the invoice file: Your customer has the option to upload their copy of the invoice or any relevant document directly to the payment.
  • Choose the payment method: bank account or card.
  • Save their payment details: They can save their card or bank account details for future payments.

When to use it:

  • You need to collect a payment, but haven't created a formal invoice in Melio yet.
  • Your customer needs to specify the payment amount themselves.
  • Your customer needs to add their invoice number or a note.

Customers who have received a payment link can find payment instructions in this guide.
