Are there any limitations when making a payment to an international vendor?

  • Updated

There are some important limitations to be aware of before making your international payment. To learn how to make an international payment, see our guides for payments in USD and payments in foreign currency

Payment amounts

Melio limits: No limit on payment amounts. Melio's international payment system can accommodate any amount, whether you need to pay a large invoice or a small fee.

Your bank's limits: While Melio doesn't restrict payment amounts, your bank may have its own limits on international transfers. Check with your bank before making an international payment to avoid any issues.

Processing time: Payments exceeding $100K require an additional 1 business day to process.

Fees

USD payments: To learn more about the transaction fees, please see the following.

Foreign currency payments: When making an international payment with foreign currency, the international processing and conversion fees are already included in the conversion rate, so there are no additional international fees. To see which foreign currencies are supported, please see the following list

Other fees: Whether the payment is in USD or foreign currency, other fees unrelated to the international payment, such as payment method fees, may still apply.

To learn more about our fees, please see the following

Supported countries

You can make international payments to vendors across Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and other regions. We're continuously expanding our coverage. You can see our complete list of supported countries here

Payment methods

International payments are only available when paying via:

  • ACH bank transfer
  • Mastercard credit card (fees apply)
  • Visa credit card (fees apply)

Make sure you select one of these payment methods when making your international payment.

Business location restrictions

Melio only supports international payments that originate in the United States. Payment methods must be located in the USA.

Unsupported industries

There are certain industries that cannot be supported. Vendors involved in diamond, charity/donation, and non-profit industries are not eligible to receive international payments through Melio.

Vendors with multiple addresses

When you want to make an international payment to a vendor with both a domestic and international address, you'll need to create two separate contacts in Melio. To learn more, please see the following guide.

Delivery considerations

All international payments sent through Melio are delivered as wire transfers to your vendors. Delivery may be affected by:

  • Weekends and holidays (every country has different bank holidays)
  • Errors in payment details, such as account numbers and SWIFT or IBAN codes
  • Number of intermediary banks involved in the transfer

Puerto Rico is not considered an international payment since it is legally a US territory.
